Navigating Leadership Accountability for DEI: with or without CDOs?

According to the Wall Street Journal, Chief Diversity Officers (CDOs) have been more vulnerable to layoffs than their human resources counterparts, experiencing 40% higher turnover. While companies are still announcing theirambitious DEI goalsand schedule diversity training, the question is whether it’s time we prioritize inclusion over diversity and whether we need CDOs for this. Companies like Netflix, Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery have recently announced that their DEI executives will be leaving their jobs. Another existing problem is that in a variety of companies such roles only serve as a “showcase”, not allowing real changes to happen.

What once was a highly demanded CDO position has put leaders under the constant pressure to show outstanding achievements, but simultaneously they face such challenges as having limited power, ineffective coordination of DEI efforts across business units, limited DEI staff to drive progress and employee resistance to DEI efforts. According to Gartner, fifty one percent of DEI professionals say that business leaders fail to take ownership for driving DEI outcomes, whereas to make real changes happen the involvement and support from the C-Suite executives (especially, CEOs) is crucial.
