Fostering inclusive design in employee’s mindset: a universal challenge
Research from the University of Cambridge reported that the scarcity of awareness of inclusive design is correlated with a systemic lack of perceived value of the benefits of designing inclusively. These two factors generate a biased perception that limits the mainstream uptake of inclusive design.
Diminishing the importance of designing spaces and experiences that are truly inclusive and create an inclusive company’s culture can limit employee’s happiness, satisfaction and ultimately innovation and productivity.
Designing is similar to an equation with variables including form, fit, function, cost, sustainability, safety, and with a multiplier coefficient that affects people’s perception of inclusion and accessibility. To make this equation fit current societal challenges we need to remember that inclusive spaces, products and services are not an option. They should be the norm as they create a culture where people can thrive.
With this talk, Matteo will highlight how to foster inclusive design in employee’s mindsets with the Inclusive Design Canvas and will share some tips on how inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility can become part of your daily routine.
