Session 2 — How to ensure ALL candidates have a fair chance of being selected, and secure the best candidate for the role?

Speakers
Inge Woudstra MSc, Gender diversity Consultant, Trainer, Speaker, Author, Researcher

Once you are attracting a wider range of candidates, they need to be offered the role by the hiring manager and accept your offer. Recruitment firms find that when they offer a balanced male/female shortlist, in 80 % of cases clients still choose a male candidate.

Something is happening in the selection process that means the usual candidates are preferred and organisations end up with a lack of diversity.

In this session you will gain practical step-by-step guidance on what works to be more objective in your selection decisions and really choose the best candidate for the role.

You will learn

How to create a fair and transparent selection process? — For a candidate to be selected you need to ensure the selection process doesn’t leave much space for bias. That requires transparency and objectivity. Learn which methods you can use to help you achieve transparency and objectivity.

Methods you will learn about include:

  • Blind CV’s — take name, gender and other identifying criteria off the CV
  • Balanced shortlists — require a specific number or % of women on each shortlist
  • Level the playing field: prepare candidates so they all have an equal opportunity to prepare and do well
  • Structured interviews — ask the same questions of every candidate
  • Diverse panels — ensure the candidate meets people like them in the interview process
  • Skills/Strengths assessment — don’t just rely on job interviews but test skills and strengths instead

How to decide which new selection methods to implement? — For each method you will learn why this method works and how it works. Then you will find out pros and cons of each to help you evaluate which ones are most suitable in your own context.

How to ensure you successfully implement new methods? — Success of a method depends entirely on how well it is implemented. Find out what pitfalls to avoid, and what to do instead to ensure your selection process is fit for purpose.
