Based on the last government census in 2020, 4.9% of the population in Mexico is living with a disability. There are many different challenges around creating inclusive ecosystems, including education, public transportation, access to healthcare, etc. Walmart Mexico and Central America is challenging the status quo to incorporate people with disabilities to the company and it´s part of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion strategy.

Our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) vision is to create a workplace culture and a safe environment where all our associates, customers, suppliers, and community feel included and treated with respect and equality; where no one is discriminated, and everyone can be themselves. All the 230,000 associates of the company are responsible to live and to promote this vision with their colleagues, team, etc.

The inclusion of People with Disabilities has been a journey for the company, there are many different stakeholders around this purpose and it's really important to engage the right people on it. In Mexico and Central America the social and physical barriers, the unconscious biases, the lack of education are only examples on how challenging could be

Key Learnings:

  • Importance of Engaging the Leadership Team
  • Connect with the company purpose
  • Learning from others and how to surpass the failure
  • Bring the expertise when needed
